A backyard party at dusk under string lights: someone mid-swing with a stick, a donkey piñata detonating candy across the lawn, the Wasatch behind the fence, burgers and brats on the grill, pie and salad on a checkered tablecloth.

Pie & Beer Day
Piñata Party

The pioneers crossed 1,300 miles of absolutely nothing to get here. You have to bring a piñata and your own beer.

Bring two things

Thing one

Your own beer

Emphasis on own. We are not buying your beer. There is a liquor store between your house and ours — there is always a liquor store between your house and ours, this is Utah — and you are going to stop at it.

Bring whatever you actually drink. Beer, Diet Coke, a thermos of soup. Just bring enough, because the guy who turns up empty and starts "just grabbing one" is a guy everybody has met and nobody has liked. Water's from the hose.

Thing two

A fully loaded piñata

Emphasis on loaded. Fill it with whatever weird or fun thing you want. Candy is the floor, not the ceiling. We've got a few to get things started, so nobody's has to go first.

We've got

  • Burgers, brats, and a salad so you can tell yourself you had a vegetable
  • Pie. Serious pie. That's the half of this holiday we're covering.
  • A few starter piñatas and a stick with some history
  • A hot grill that is yours to use — bring something to throw on it if you want
  • A back yard, a fence, and roughly one mountain range of scenery
  • Beer: zero. None. Not one. We are not your dad.

What we mean by "loaded"

Go on. Hit it.

Three swings. That's all anybody gets.
